CALCULATING THE CPF PAYABLE ON ADDITIONAL WAGES

Paying your employees’ bonuses and leave pay? Such payments are considered Additional Wages as they are not granted wholly and exclusively for the month.

Learn how to calculate and monitor the Additional Wage contributions in 3 simple steps to avoid the hassle of subsequent refunds!

Step 1: Estimate the Ordinary Wages on which CPF contributions are payable for the current year

What was your employee’s monthly Ordinary Wage in 2005? Use it as an estimate for total Ordinary Wages to be paid in 2006. Don’t forget to apply the salary ceiling which is $4,500 from 1 January 2006.

E.g. Employee A was paid $5,000 a month in 2005. Applying the current salary ceiling of $4,500, the estimated total Ordinary Wages for 2006 on which CPF is payable is $54,000 (i.e. $4,500 X 12).

Step 2: Estimate the Additional Wage Ceiling

Additional Wage Ceiling determines the maximum amount of Additional Wages on which CPF is payable. Here's how to estimate the Additional Wage Ceiling for 2006:

Additional Wage Ceiling = $76,5001 – Total Ordinary Wages on which CPF is payable in the year2

1 Equivalent to 17 months multiplied by the monthly CPF salary ceiling of $4,500.
2 The sum of the monthly Ordinary Wages on which CPF is payable, up to the maximum of $54,000 (i.e. $4,500 x 12).

E.g. Since Employee A’s estimated total Ordinary Wages on which CPF is payable for 2006 is $54,000, his estimated Additional Wage Ceiling is $76,500 - $54,000 = $22,500.

Step 3: Recalculate the Actual Additional Wage Ceiling

In December 2006 (or the last month of employment), recalculate the correct Additional Wage Ceiling based on the actual wages. This is to ensure that you do not contribute beyond the Additional Wage Ceiling.

                    Example:
Assuming Employee A earned the same amount of Ordinary Wages as estimated, his Additional Wage Ceiling will be $22,500. Even though he earned a mid-year bonus of $10,000 and a year-end bonus of $20,000 (total bonus = $30,000), you are only required to pay CPF contributions on Additional Wages for him up to $22,500 instead of $30,000.

Need help? Use our CPF Additional Wage Ceiling Calculator on www.cpf.gov.sg to estimate your employee’s Additional Wage Ceiling!
