...Stretching Your Medisave Dollars

    In The Event of Hospitalisation

Should you require admission into a hospital, you will need to bring along identification documents, a doctor's referral letter, if any, and supporting documents indicating payment from the insurer/employer.

Hospital bill charges vary as it depends on the type of ward and the type of hospital you are admitted to. The fees for medical services such as X-rays and laboratory tests are charged under ward charges for Medisave/MediShield claim. Surgical operations are charged separately. Cost is definitely a major concern for everyone. You should always choose a ward that you can afford.

To claim from Medisave, you would have to inform the hospital of your intention and sign the Medisave Authorisation Form (MAF), which is available from the hospital. The hospital would submit the claim after you are discharged. The use of Medisave is subject to the existing Medisave withdrawal limits.

If you intend to use Medisave, you should do the following before hospitalisation:

    • Ask your doctor or the hospital staff for the estimated cost of hospital charges from a few hospitals and the different ward charges
    • Check your Medisave balance, the amount of Medisave you can use, and the balance that needs to be paid in cash.
