Immediate concerns

Obtain Certificate of Cause of Death and register the death

When the death of your loved one occurs, the first thing you need to do is to obtain two certificates:

  • the Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD)
  • the Death Certificate which contains the Permit to Bury/Cremate
    If the death took place in Singapore, you need to register the death within 24 hours of occurrence. To register a death you need to produce the following documents:

    • Certificate of Cause of Death(CCOD) issued by doctors or Authorised Officers from the Ministry of Health;
    • Deceased's identification documents (eg. IC & Passport) for cancellation;
    • Informant's Identification documents (eg. IC or Passport).
    Last medical bill

    The deceased member’s Medisave can be used fully, to pay his last medical bill, if he passes away during his hospitalisation.

    If the deceased member had not signed the Medisave Authorisation Form (MAF) before his death, his immediate family members (spouse, parents, or child who is 18 years and above) or deputy/donee appointed under the Mental Capacity Act may sign the MAF to use the deceased member’s Medisave to pay his last medical bill. This must be done before the distribution of Medisave monies to the deceased member’s nominees.

    Funeral arrangements

    Depending on religion and preference, the funeral ceremonial rites and costs may vary widely. A funeral can be as simple or as elaborate in accordance with the wishes of the deceased or family.

    Burial, cremation & ash storage

    The body may be buried or cremated depending on the wishes and religion of the deceased. The cremated ashes may be stored in a columbaria niche.
