Medisave

The Medisave Scheme is a national healthcare savings scheme designed to help members pay for hospitalisation expenses incurred in B2/C class wards in restructured hospitals. Medisave can be used to pay for certain expensive and recurrent outpatient treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy and dialysis. You can also use Medisave to pay the medical expenses incurred by yourself or your immediate family members.

The use of Medisave is subject to withdrawal limits that are generally sufficient to pay the charges incurred by a patient staying in a B2/C class ward in a restructured hospital. Thus, if you or your immediate family members wish to stay in a higher class ward or seek treatment from a private hospital, you may have to pay part of the bill in cash. It is therefore important that you choose a ward or medical service which you can afford.

MediShield

MediShield is a catastrophic medical insurance scheme to help you and/or your dependant(s) meet the cost of medical treatment for serious illnesses or prolonged hospitalisations. MediShield works most effectively for hospitalisations at Class B2/C level in restructured hospitals. It complements Medisave savings, which may be greatly strained in the event of prolonged illnesses which require longer-term medical treatment.

If you wish to have higher insurance coverage (e.g., treatment in Class A/B1 wards in restructured hospital or treatment in private hospitals), you should consider purchasing a Medisave-approved Integrated Shield Plan from the private insurers.

You may use your Medisave savings to pay the premiums for your own and/or dependants’ MediShield plans or Medisave-approved Integrated Shield Plans. The withdrawal limit is subject to the Medisave withdrawal limit of $800 per insured person, per policy year, if the insured person is below 81 years old (age next birthday). For insured person who is 81 years old (age next birthday) and above, the withdrawal limit for premiums will be increased to $1,150 per insured person, per policy year from 1 December 2008.

If you are currently not covered under MediShield and would like to be covered, you should apply before you turn 75 years old. The maximum coverage age is 85 years. As with any insurance plan, the acceptance of application for MediShield is subject to good health. Thus, members are required to declare their health conditions when they apply for cover.
