What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is an easy way of keeping track of the updates on your favorite websites. RSS allows a website to inform you every time there are updates. This information is called a “feed”. The feed is delivered directly to your device (e.g. feed reader, mobile phone or PDA), so your inbox is not cluttered with email messages. You can subscribe to RSS feeds from your favorite websites.

Do not be alarmed if you see a page of XML codes (see Figure 1) when you click on these buttons. It simply means that your browser does not have a built-in feed reader. Newer browsers like IE 7 or Firefox 2 will automatically render these XML codes into a readable page (see Figure 2).

How do I subscribe to an RSS Feed?

You can subscribe to an RSS feed using an RSS Reader, commonly known as an “aggregator" which is a small software program that collects and displays RSS feeds from different websites. You can also choose to view the feeds and updates in your “feed-enabled” browser, like IE 7, Firefox 2, Opera 7.5 or Safari 2.0.

Subscribe using an RSS Reader eg. Google Reader, Newsgator. Please refer to Annex A for a step-by-step guide. For more RSS Readers, please click here.

Subscribe using "feed-enabled" browser:
If you are using a “feed-enabled” browser like Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Opera 7.5 or Safari 2.0 (Mac), click on the RSS icon followed by “subscribe to this feed” (see Figure 3).

How do you know if your browser is feed-enabled? Look out for these icons on your browser toolbar:

IE7 toolbar or  Firefox2 toolbar or  Safari2 toolbar
